The first modern US government-run lottery was in New Hampshire in 1964. Lotteries are also available in the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and other US territories.<\/p>\n

In many cases, the proceeds from lottery ticket sales go to charitable causes. The first known European lotteries were held in the Roman Empire. These lotteries were mainly amusements at dinner parties.<\/p>\n
